Instagram post 17856527879737090 Tasmanian whisky touring – new finds and second looks.

A fairly epic line-up for our latest review, as Luke McCarthy rounds up some cellar door exclusives, hard to come by bottlings and recent core range releases following a trip to Tassie.

On tasting is the triple distilled Hunnington Single Malt Whisky (our first look), the Old Kempton Old Stables and Solera, Hellyers Road's Sherry Cask 7 Year Old, Spring Bay Virgin Oak, Spirit Thief's American Oak Cabernet and Bourbon, and two stunning single casks from Killara.

There’s a huge array of new and interesting Tassie whiskies to explore these days. Hit the link in our bio for the full review and chat on what’s new and emerging.

Instagram post 17940209071898172 Review: McHenry Single Malt Whisky

“I've been driving up the bumpy dirt road that leads to McHenry Distillery since 2013. The location of William (Bill) McHenry's distillery on Mount Arthur is something else.

The hillside where sprawling huts and weathered sheds have been built into is alive with wildlife. Bottle green rain forest hangs over the place like a church organ. Sea air from Antarctica drifts across the mountain after journeying a few thousand kilometres north from the Southern Ocean. The scent mingles with the eucalypts and the surrounding scrub.

They say the air's different down there. Breathe it in and you'll know what they mean.

Of all the locations where whisky is made in Australia, I find this place the most beguiling, the most promising, the most intimidating.”

McHenry Single Malt Whisky hails from Australia's southernmost distillery near Port Arthur, one of the most stunning distillery locations in the country.

Bill McHenry and his team have been releasing whisky produced there since 2016, and this subtle single malt has long flown under the radar.

For our latest review and distillery profile – link in our bio – Luke McCarthy reviews five McHenry single malts and takes you up the mountain and into the story behind one of Tasmania’s most remote whiskies.

Six months in the Tasmanian distilling scene is a long time, so there was a huge amount to catch up on.

Instagram post 17926936952034579 Tasmanian whisky trip!

Editor Luke McCarthy has been on the road touring Tasmania lately, visiting distilleries and catching up on all the latest in the whisky and distilling scene there.

Finally getting down to Tassie again is pretty special. None of the Oz Whisky Review team have been able to visit over the last two years due to border restrictions (we used to get down a few times every year!).

But now, there's plenty of Tasmanian whisky insights, articles, profiles and reviews coming your way, so stay tuned.

Instagram post 17907077864398123 EXCLUSIVE: Ostra Distillers, based in Robinvale in Victoria’s north west, have announced their purchase of the former West End brewhouse previously owned by Lion.

The purchase will see the 500hl brewery that Lion closed last year, and previously part of a $70 million refurbishment completed in 2015, transferred from the iconic West End site in Adelaide to Ostra’s Robinvale facility.

Until now, scant information has been publicly available on @ostradistillers, which is set to become one of Australia’s largest malt and grain whisky distilleries.

But Ostra's founder David Ostrowski spoke exclusively to Oz Whisky Review on the sale, and gave us an in-depth rundown on the Robinvale site and his plans to take Australian whisky to a global audience.

Instagram post 17949145516646256 Review: Australian rum cask finished whiskies.

For the rum fans out there, @queen_ofthe_dram takes a look at the ever-growing genre of Australian rum cask finished whiskies.

A number of Australian whisky makers also produce rum, so there's some intriguing common ground to be explored here (we’re also big rum fans at Oz Whisky Review).

On tasting are rum cask finished malts from Killara, Riverbourne, Black Gate, Hobart Whisky and Lark, and we’re hoping to get to even more whiskies in this style throughout the year.
