Instagram post 18203327743161134 NEW RELEASE: St Agnes Distillery in Renmark has released its first single malts with the unveiling of Camborne Single Malt Whisky.

Australia’s leading brandy producer and the country’s oldest family-owned and continuously operating distillery first laid down casks of single malt spirit in 2015 using their historic brandy pot stills.

Four single cask Camborne expressions have been bottled for this first release, and for all the details we chatted to fifth generation winemaker Richard Angove about his vision for the project and what to expect from Camborne single malt whisky in future.

Founded in 2000, the @sfwspiritscomp is one of the longest running and most influential spirits competitions in the world.

It’s a big moment for the Melbourne whisky producer, receiving 12 double gold and 3 gold in this year's judging and becoming the first Australian distillery to take the top honour in the competition's 22 year history.

Every month we compile a list of the latest Australian whiskies to be released from right across the country. Over 80 Australian distilleries have their own distinct whisky on the market, so the sheer number of single malts, rye, corn and grain whiskies now available is huge.

From first releases like Winding Road Distilling Co.'s Hinterland Single Malt Whisky, to Lawrenny's new Descension bottling, and The Gospel Projects Fortified Cask rye whiskey, the last month saw a massive array of quality whiskies released.

Hit the link in our bio for a round-up of these and other Australian whiskies from Bakery Hill, Lark, Backwoods, Starward and more.

Instagram post 17940209071898172 Review: McHenry Single Malt Whisky

“I've been driving up the bumpy dirt road that leads to McHenry Distillery since 2013. The location of William (Bill) McHenry's distillery on Mount Arthur is something else.

The hillside where sprawling huts and weathered sheds have been built into is alive with wildlife. Bottle green rain forest hangs over the place like a church organ. Sea air from Antarctica drifts across the mountain after journeying a few thousand kilometres north from the Southern Ocean. The scent mingles with the eucalypts and the surrounding scrub.

They say the air's different down there. Breathe it in and you'll know what they mean.

Of all the locations where whisky is made in Australia, I find this place the most beguiling, the most promising, the most intimidating.”

McHenry Single Malt Whisky hails from Australia's southernmost distillery near Port Arthur, one of the most stunning distillery locations in the country.

Bill McHenry and his team have been releasing whisky produced there since 2016, and this subtle single malt has long flown under the radar.

For our latest review and distillery profile – link in our bio – Luke McCarthy reviews five McHenry single malts and takes you up the mountain and into the story behind one of Tasmania’s most remote whiskies.

Instagram post 17926936952034579 Tasmanian whisky trip!

Editor Luke McCarthy has been on the road touring Tasmania lately, visiting distilleries and catching up on all the latest in the whisky and distilling scene there.

Finally getting down to Tassie again is pretty special. None of the Oz Whisky Review team have been able to visit over the last two years due to border restrictions (we used to get down a few times every year!).

But now, there's plenty of Tasmanian whisky insights, articles, profiles and reviews coming your way, so stay tuned.
