The forgotten history of South Australian whisky

South Australia has a long, mostly forgotten history of whisky production. Unbeknown to many, some of South Australia’s most iconic wine names (Penfolds, Yalumba, Seppelstfield) have released whisky brands in the past. Now, with the spirits industry flourishing, we dive into the long-overlooked story of whisky making in the wine state.

First Look: Kilderkin Goldfields Single Malt Whisky

Kilderkin Distillery release Goldfields Single Malt Whisky. The Ballarat distillery, owned by Chris Pratt and Rebecca Mathews, has slowly built up its whisky stocks since starting production in 2016 and here we review their inaugural bottling.

Thebarton Distillery

Thebarton Distillery was one of South Australia’s most significant early distilleries. First constructed in 1892 on the banks of the River Torrens, the distillery produced several styles of spirit over its 80 years in production, including the once popular Milne’s Whisky brands.

Waubs Harbour Distillery

Waubs Harbour Distillery, founded by Tim, Bec and Rob Polmear, is located right on the water’s edge in Bicheno on Tasmania’s stunning east coast. The maritime malt whisky producer has quickly becoming one of the state’s most talked about up-and-coming distilleries.
