Review: Furneaux Flinders Island Peated Second Fill Sherry Finish

Another cracking bottling from Furneaux Distillery on Flinders Island. Their whiskies are starting to sell out quickly as more people get word of how good this stuff is. This is one of my favourite bottlings so far.

    • Style: Single malt whisky
    • Production Story: Distilled at Furneaux Distillery in 2019 from Tasmanian malted barley that was smoked using Flinders Island peat. Initially matured in 5x20 litre second fill casks and then finished for eight months in an ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry cask. Released May 2023. 141 bottles in total.

    Nose
    Sea spray and nougat upfront. The PX flavours , adding caramel and dates. Green apple and nectarine. Then the savoury, hot sand, rock pools flavour from the Flinders Island peat.
    Palate
    Bright, spirit-forward, and the sherry cask influence is finely balanced. The creaminess hinted at on the nose is palpable here, while the peat comes on gently with sea salt, kelp and burnt grass. Love the interplay between spirit and cask. Spot on ABV. kipper, grass and sea spray. Great choice if ABV. Good length and texture. Hint of freshness and youth, the delicious kind though.
    Finish
    Tapers here. Nutty sherry and jam. Touch of youth.
    Comments
    This rewards multiple passes. It's at the subtle end of the peat spectrum, but the smart use of refill casks has allowed all the complexity in the spirit to bubble to the surface. Loving the evolution of Furneaux's whiskies.
